My 15-year old has really severe allergies. He has taken Singulair & Claritin but none seem to work?

Can anyone recommend a home remedy or an air purifier or humidifier that might help? (He goes through this every summer, we live in N.Y, N.Y)

Mucinex does help me when I’m out of everything else; it can help clear that post-nasal drip. Are you sure it’s not a sinus infection (sinusitis)? I get that sometimes and the only thing that helps is antibiotics, or else I have trouble breathing (bad cough). Also, ask the doc about whether Nasonex may help — my husband has allergy attacks and that helps him. Claritin and Singulair tend to stop working after you build up an immunity to it. Hope this helps, I know what a pain allergies are in dry weather!

I used mucinex, wich works well and i also used zertex which was also good. Vapor rub works well, steamy shower.

If he has severe allergies and what was prescribed or what you have tried do not work, depending on how bad it affects him, you could consider going to an allergist for allergy testing. You need to find out what is causing the allergic reactions and avoid those triggers if at all possible.

You should go to an specialist if he suffers from severe allergies. the doctor will be able to let you know what things he’s allergic to and the best medicine for that, also he’ll give you some recommendations on things you will have to change or avoid around the house.

Don’t play around with allergies giving your son medicines that other people take. Go to a doctor and get the right one for him.

If your looking at Purifiers have a look at http://www.allergiesshop.com they have some good ones there as well as many other allergies items .

If your son has really really bad allergies and they affect his breathing then please dont mess around too much and get him to a professional allergy specialist ASAP – its not worth the risk !!

Is it dust related? I have to wear a mask if I vacuum because it affects both my breathing and my eyes so I have replaced most of the carpet in the house now , as well as replaced the blinds back with curtains so that I can wash the curtains regularly, if you can do the same although its expensive it can make a huge difference !

A prescription steroidal nasal spray works so much better than antihistamines. However, it can take a week to take effect, so it is actually recommended that it be started just before hayfever season. Nasonex or Beconase AQ work well.

Try mangosteen juice. It helps my 11 year old son.

Many allergenic particles are suspended in household air, and there is no doubt that an air purifier can improve air quality. However, it should also be noted that there are far more particles resting on surfaces like rugs, furniture and countertops, and keeping these areas clean is the most important step in controlling your asthma symptoms.

For Allergy and Asthma Air Purifiers, look for air purifiers with both HEPA and Activated Carbon filters for advanced particulate control.
