Cheap Air Purifier

I live in Australia and I need to buy a air purifier for a room which smells really bad. I want to turn the room into an office. It smells so bad I can’t think.
The windows need repairing and the plaster wall probably has dampness in it. Smells like mold. The room has been newly painted.
Fixing it is not an option for now as I’m renting, and getting them to it fix may take a really long time. If ever…
Leaving the windows open is not enough. I want to remove the smell of mold, new paint, vinegar and bleach.
Would an good air purifier remove the smells?
Which one should I buy?

Are the more expensive air purifiers better than the cheaper ones?
Do they work at removing odors?

If it is smell you want to remove get something with activated charcoal in it. Ebay has a lot of air cleaners cheap, especially the hepa type because the hepa filter is so expensive to replace and no one wants to buy them. They’re still good actually–if its just odors you want to remove. You can buy a new charcoal impregnated pre-filter (cheap) without replacing the hepa filter.

I bought a used air purifier off of craigslist.com that worked fine. I wasn’t sure if it would help my allergies so I thought I’d go the cheap way first. Well once I got the thing home and turned it on, it started giving off this weird smell. I’m assuming it’s just the smell of the guy’s house. It doesn’t stink but is really distinct and bothers me!!!! It’s not the filters, though. I cleaned them and smelled them and they are fine. It’s the actual unit. Anything I can do??? Will it eventually go away????

I’m not familiar with air purifiers. Do they run on air or water? If it is water, try running white vinegar in it instead of water. That should take away the smell.
